Why is battery cell sorting and matching important?

Battery cell sorting and matching is one of the key processes in the battery pack assembly process. The purpose is to select battery cells with good electrical performance consistency through sorting and match them into a group to ensure the consistency of the battery module's electrical performance and extend the service life of the battery pack.

A battery pack is usually assembled from multiple battery cells in series and parallel. If the electrical performance consistency of the battery cells is poor, the cycle life of the battery pack will be shortened because as the usage time increases, it depends on the battery cell with the worst electrical performance.

Although the degree of automation in battery cell manufacturing is getting higher and higher, the battery cell manufacturing process is very complicated. Slight differences in raw materials, components and environment will cause inconsistencies between battery cells, and this inconsistency will become greater as the use time increases.

Therefore, for battery pack manufacturers, incoming battery cell sorting and matching are necessary processes to reduce the initial differences of battery cells in the same battery pack as much as possible, improve consistency, and thus improve the performance and cycle life of the battery pack.
